What does 750 mean
Many people find the number 750 engraved inside a ring or on the clasp of a chain and do not know what it means. This page explains it in simple words, together with the other common marks.
What does the number 750 mean?
It means the piece has 18 carats, that is, that out of every thousand parts, seven hundred and fifty are pure gold. The rest are other metals, added to give the piece more resistance and so that it stands up better to daily use.
Where does this mark usually appear?
It is engraved on the inside of rings and wedding bands, or on the clasp of chains and bracelets. It is a small number, sometimes hard to read with the naked eye, so a magnifying glass or good light helps to find it, above all if the piece is old and the engraving has worn away.
What other marks might I find?
Besides 750, these are the most common marks.
- 999, 24 carat gold, pure gold
- 916, 22 carat gold
- 750, 18 carat gold
- 585, 14 carat gold
- 375, 9 carat gold
And if I see the mark 925?
That mark is not for gold, it is for silver. It shows that, out of every thousand parts, nine hundred and twenty-five are pure silver, and that the rest are other metals added for the same reason as in gold. You can read more in selling silver.
What if my piece has no mark at all?
That is not a problem. Some old pieces, or very elaborate pieces, carry no visible mark, or it has worn away with everyday use. In that case, the valuer checks the carats on the spot, with a test that does not damage the piece, and gives you the result in writing before you decide anything.
Is the mark enough to know the value of my piece?
The mark shows the purity, but the value also depends on the weight of the piece and on today's gold price. Two pieces with the same 750 can be worth different amounts if they weigh differently, so the mark is only the first detail. You can read more in how we calculate value.
Can I always trust the engraved mark?
In general yes, but the valuer checks the carats all the same with a test that does not damage the piece, even if the mark is already clear. It is a way of confirming the detail before giving you the value in writing.
