How we calculate value
Many people want to know how the figure offered for a piece is reached. This page explains the method, step by step, in simple words and with nothing hidden.
What is looked at first?
The weight of the piece. It is weighed on a certified scale, in front of you, at your own table. The weight is the first detail that goes into the calculation of the value, and you see it with your own eyes before any figure is mentioned.
What is looked at next?
The purity, or carats, of the piece. It is the amount of pure gold it contains, compared with the other metals that go with it to give it strength. It is checked with a carat test that does not damage the piece. You can read more in what are carats.
What role does today's gold price play?
The gold price of that day, published on our main page, is the reference on which the value is calculated. From the weight and purity of your piece, and from that price, a first figure is obtained, which is then adjusted to the particular piece. You can read more in gold price today.
And does the condition of the piece matter?
The condition does not reduce the value of the metal. A broken, scratched or incomplete piece is worth the same as a whole piece, provided it has the same weight and the same purity. What can add value, in some cases, is that a piece has interest as a collector's piece, and the valuer tells you clearly if that is so, before you decide anything.
Who decides the final value?
The valuer, on seeing the piece in person, in your home. He combines the weight, the purity, today's price and the condition of the piece, and gives you a specific value for each one separately. He hands it to you in writing, with a receipt, before you decide anything.
Can I check the calculation?
Yes. The valuer shows you the weight on the scale and explains the result of the carat test in front of you. Nothing is calculated out of your sight, and you can ask whatever you need before accepting.
