Sell gold chains
Many people keep gold chains loose, with a broken clasp or unused for years. This page explains how a chain is valued, why the workmanship of the piece does not enter the calculation and what happens with gold plate.
How is a gold chain valued?
By its weight and its carats, like any gold piece. The valuer weighs the chain on a certified scale, at your own table, and checks the carats with a test that does not damage the piece. The design, the type of link or the goldsmith's work do not change the value of the metal, even if the chain is very fine or very elaborate.
What if the clasp is broken?
That is no problem. A chain with a broken clasp is valued the same as a whole chain, because the value lies in the weight and purity of the gold, not in whether the clasp works or whether it can be worn. You can read more in selling broken gold.
Are loose or mixed chains accepted?
Yes. You can show several chains together, even if they are of different carats or mixed with other pieces in the same drawer. The valuer separates them and weighs each one on its own before giving the value, so you do not need to sort them beforehand.
What about gold plate?
Gold plate is not accepted, because it is a very thin layer of gold over another metal and does not contain an amount of gold that can be weighed and valued. If you have doubts about a particular chain, the valuer confirms it at the visit, with no commitment.
How do I know the carats of my chain?
Many chains carry a number engraved on the inside, such as 750 or 585, although it is sometimes hard to read with the naked eye. If it carries no mark, or it cannot be read, the valuer checks the carats on the spot with a test that does not damage the piece. You can read more in what does 750 mean.
How does the visit work?
The valuer comes to your home on the day we agree with you, identifies himself with a name, photo and identification number, and weighs each chain at your table. He gives you the value in writing, with a receipt for each piece, before you decide anything.
