Sell broken gold

Many people keep broken gold in a drawer, thinking it is worth nothing. That is not so. This page explains why the condition of a piece does not change its value and exactly what is accepted.

Is broken gold worth less than whole gold?

No. The value of a gold piece lies in its weight and its purity, not in whether it is whole, broken or bent. A single earring, a chain with a broken clasp or a bent ring are valued the same as a piece in perfect condition, provided they have the same weight and the same carats. This surprises many people who keep broken gold thinking it is no longer of use.

What kinds of broken pieces are accepted?

Any gold piece, whatever its state. Chains without a clasp, single earrings, bent rings, brooches without a pin or remains of old jewellery that is no longer used. The piece does not need to be wearable or part of a complete set.

Why does condition not affect the value?

Because what is bought is the metal, not the finished jewel. The valuer weighs the piece at your table and checks its carats with a test that does not damage what remains of it. From the weight and the purity the value is calculated, as with any other piece, broken or not.

What if I do not know the carats of a broken piece?

That is no problem. The valuer checks the carats on the spot, with a test that does not damage the piece, whether it is complete or not and even if it carries no visible mark. You can read more in what are carats.

Can I mix broken and whole pieces in the same visit?

Yes. The valuer weighs and values each piece separately, whatever its condition. You decide, piece by piece, which ones you wish to sell and which you prefer to keep.

How does the visit work?

A valuer comes to your home on the day we agree with you, identifies himself with a name, photo and identification number, and weighs each piece at your table. He gives you the value in writing, with a receipt for each piece, before you decide anything.
