Sell gold watches
A gold watch raises a question that other pieces do not, because one part is the metal and another part is the watch itself. This page explains how the two are separated and what is accepted.
Which part of the watch is valued as gold?
The case and the bracelet, if they are solid gold, are weighed and valued like any gold piece, by their weight and their carats. That part is calculated with the same method as a chain or a ring, on the scale at your own table.
And the value of the watch as a watch?
That is a different question. The brand, the movement and the working condition can give a value of their own, beyond the gold the case contains. The valuer explains it at the visit, looking at the particular watch, because each model is different and there is no single rule that suits all of them.
Are the two things studied separately?
Yes. The valuer explains, on one side, the value of the gold of the case and the bracelet and, on the other, if it applies, the value of the watch as a piece in itself. He tells you clearly, without mixing the two amounts into a single figure, so that you understand where each part comes from.
Are watches that do not work accepted?
Yes. A stopped or damaged watch can be sold all the same, as with selling broken gold. The gold part is valued by its weight and its carats, whether or not the movement works, and even if parts are missing inside.
And gold plated watches?
Plate is not accepted as gold, because it is a very thin layer over another metal and does not contain an amount of gold that can be weighed and valued. If you have doubts about your watch, the valuer confirms it at the visit, with no commitment.
How does the visit work?
A valuer comes to your home on the day we agree with you, identifies himself with a name, photo and identification number, and examines the watch at your table, calmly. He gives you the value in writing, with a receipt, before you decide anything.
